Tips on Finding the Best Thermostat for Your Home This Summer

Thinking About Installing a New Thermostat? Consider These Three Top Models!

Thermostats have come a long way since basic mercury thermostats were the norm for over 200 years. While some homes still have these old-school thermostats, most have moved on to digital programmable or smart thermostats. Not only are new smart thermostats safer for the home and the environment, but they are also more efficient, saving homeowners up to hundreds of dollars a year on their energy bills. But, there are so many options on the market, it's hard to decide which one is best. Well, read on to find out the pros and cons of the top three thermostats available right now.

The Honeywell Home T5+ Smart Thermostatthermostat

The Honeywell Home T5+ Smart Thermostat is one of the best budget-friendly smart thermostats available now on the market. It's a basic smart thermostat, which is great for homeowners who upgrade and have never used a smart thermostat before. It's square, sleek, and features a nice touchscreen that's easy to navigate. It's compatible with multiple voice assistant programs like Alexa, can be operated from a smartphone app anywhere with a signal. It can also learn the home's schedule, optimizing cooling and heating based on when people are home or away.

There are a couple of drawbacks to be aware of, though. Firstly, this thermostat isn't ENERGY STAR certified, which is a deal-breaker for some. That said, it's likely to be more efficient than other programmable thermostats, given enough time to learn. It also doesn't provide energy usage reports like some other smart thermostats do.

Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Controlthermostat

Next up is the Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control. It's a little more expensive than the Honeywell mentioned above, but it does come with some more advanced features. One feature is the single remote room sensor placed in a room far from the thermostat to help keep the home at a steady temperature. Additional sensors are available to buy. This thermostat also works with Alexa and has a ton of options for third-party integrations. It will also learn the home's schedule and optimize accordingly. It's easy to install and has a sleek black design.

Other than the high price, most people don't have anything negative to say about this thermostat. However, it is a little bit large for some people's taste, and it doesn't come with Google Assistant built-in. Those who use Alexa, though, are bound to enjoy this thermostat.

Google Nest Learning Thermostat

The last thermostat on the list is Google's Nest Learning Thermostat. This latest iteration of the Nest thermostat is bound to be pleasing for many. Like other smart thermostats, it's good at learning from the home's habits and acting accordingly. It is round, simple, and elegant. And adjusting the temperature is as easy as moving a dial around the thermostat itself. No pushing buttons are required. This thermostat is also available with sensors and uses geofencing to tell when homeowners are getting close to home to cool or heat the house.

There are certain drawbacks to this thermostat. The first is that it doesn't integrate with Apple HomeKit, and likely won't anytime soon. The other is that it can be a bit of a hassle to set up, but that only needs to be done once, so it's not a big deal.
