Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day

memorialday

What does Memorial Day mean to you? For a lot of people, they think of fireworks and of cooking out on the grill. Maybe they put their American flags out too. They may even put their air conditioning on or jump in the pool.

But for people in the military and who have had family members in the military, Memorial Day is the day to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of those in the country.

Spending time with family is important, but it’s also important that we all remember the true meaning of Memorial Day. That’s why we have given you some suggestions on what you can do to celebrate Memorial Day.

What Started as Decoration Day

decorationdayBefore Memorial Day became a federal holiday, celebrated by all Americas, this tradition started in post-Civil War America.

In the days and years following the then “Great War,” families and soldiers alike would return to the graves of their fallen brothers to “decorate” their tombstones.

Whether it was flowers, wreaths, medals, or any other memento they could find, it was a healing process in the wake of one of the deadliest conflicts in history. As the country has progressed, and we’ve found ourselves in many more conflicts, the day has evolved into something more.

Memorial Day was officially recognized as a Federal Holiday in the 1970s. While it's known for many as the start of summer, it’s still a time to remember the sacrifice of men and women who have given their lives for our country.

Offer Help to Military Spouses in Honor

That’s why it’s a good idea for honoring Memorial Day by offering help to their spouses and loved ones.

Even though it’s a great thing for you to show your gratitude to members of the service, it’s also a good idea to help out their spouses and families.

With a single person living at home, the tasks that are done from day to day often are overwhelming, and they appreciate any kinds of breaks they can get.

You can cook meals, give them rides to places, babysit, take them meals and other helpful things to lessen the stress.

We Sincerely Thank Our Clients
