We live in Arizona. We know HEAT. We are at the start of the 100+ degree season!
Now is not the time for your air conditioner unit to be acting up. Sadly, this is the most common time for an air conditioner to break since they get a lot more use and are under more stress in these high temperatures.
Is your air conditioner acting up? Maybe it’s blowing out hot air?
While there may be many reasons your air conditioner is blowing out hot air, here are a few things to check prior to calling in help.
Yes, we know. That sounds like a stupid thing to say, but it happens!
Check your thermostat. Is it turned on? Make sure it’s on and set at the temperature range comfortable to you.
Is it set to COOL instead of HEAT? We’ve seen it. Someone accidentally bumps the switch from cool to heat, so your unit starts blowing warm air.
Is the fan switch set to AUTO? If the unit is set to ON instead of AUTO, it will always be running the fan, even if the cooling unit is not on. This will cause it to blow cold air when the cooling unit is on, but warm air the rest of the time.
NOTE: If you have kids, try replacing your thermostat with one that is WiFi capable and can be controlled and monitored through your smartphone, tablet, or computer. This will eliminate the possibility of you coming home from work to find your system has failed or someone accidentally changed the temperature when they shouldn’t have.
Check the outside unit.
Take a stroll outside to make sure nothing is covering the cooling unit outside. Make sure nothing accidentally got placed on the unit, and be sure the area is clear of leaves or brush. These items can put a strain on the cooling unit, making it impossible for the unit to work at optimal performance.
NOTE: While checking the outside unit, make sure it’s running at the same time you feel warm air moving inside. If the unit is not running, call a professional. There could be an issue with the unit or with power getting to the unit.
Check the air filter.
If your air filter has not been changed in a while, it could be full and be restricting the airflow going through. Change your air filters every 90 days, especially in Arizona. We have a lot of dust in the air, and this can fill up the filter if not changed frequently. If you have pets, change it more regularly–every 45-60 days.
There are many other reasons why your air conditioner may not be working correctly, but these are the best items to check before calling the professionals.
Also ensure your air conditioner units are serviced seasonally and kept factory fresh. This confirms your units are running at optimal performance year round (and can save you money on your electricity costs as well).
