Five common problems with Air Conditioning not cooling.
While a couple of them can be addressed by a savvy homeowner, most require the assistance of an Air Conditioning and Heating technician. You’ll find Wolfgang’s Cooling and Heating when you need AC Service in Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale & East Valley because we believe in servicing the entire unit from installation to tune-ups and preventing large-scale repairs.
First thing to check
One of the most common cooling system problems boils down to operator error. Windows and doors that have been left open, incorrect thermostat settings or a tripped breaker could be the culprit. Investigate these first before contacting your HVAC-system contractor.
Inadequate installation and/or maintenance
If your cooling system wasn’t sized properly and installed by an expert HVAC-system contractor, you could be in for major problems. An air conditioner that’s too large will cycle on and off frequently, failing to dehumidify your home, and a system that’s too small won’t be able to do the job. Once installed, cooling systems require annual maintenance to run efficiently and mitigate small issues before they turn into more expensive repairs. You can do some tasks, like changing the air filter, yourself. Other maintenance, such as detailed inspections, refrigerant recharging, testing/adjusting electrical connections and parts lubrication, should be done by a technician.
The refrigerant is the key to cooling your home. It’s the substance that absorbs the heat from the interior air so that it can be transferred outside. If there are leaks, and the refrigerant level is low, your A/C will struggle to achieve your desired indoor temperature.
Over time, fan controls and the compressor can wear out. Corrosion of the wires and/or their terminals can also cause issues. For safety reasons, suspected electrical problems should be left to the professionals.
Problems with the condensate drain
Humid climates like ours are particularly susceptible to drainage problems because of the amount of condensation that occurs while the A/C does its job. Make sure the drain is free of debris. If you have cleared it, and water is still pooling, you may have a blockage or damage farther down the condensate drain line. Call Wolfgang’s Cooling and Heating your AC Repair Specialist.
